ow1

The idea behind the OW1 stool manipulates the simple form of the obi and transforms it into diverse and complex objects.

There can be complexity in simplicity. Masayuki Sato designs things that obey the theme of “containing complexity” by adding simple touches and treatments to simple forms. He believes this gives the object diversity, clarity, logic and profundity at the same time. For the design of the OW1 stool, he adopted the idea of a single element – a felt sheet shaped like an obi (a simple, traditional Japanese belt worn with the kimono). He saw the potential in this simple rectangular object to be shaped into various kinds of configurations and to be functionalised, just like origami. The form of OW1 serves to satisfy structural requirements at the same time.

The felt obi can be made structural by “filling it” with resin. Wire mesh placed inside the felt obi enabled the creation of shape without the use of any mould. With this method of forming and making organic-shaped objects, the use of moulds (which are usually expensive for small production runs) can be avoided. Various shapes can be made with this method. OW1 is just one of the possible outputs. The obi-shaped felt was manipulated within the restrictions of its rectangular-shape. Incorporating a sense of simplicity and spirituality into the design, both ends of the obi were pressed together, like the way we press our hands together in prayer. With resin inserted, the felt obi is stiff enough to support the weight of the body, while maintaining its soft surface texture. This dichotomy is interesting and reminds us that the stool is made of fabric. We can say that OW1 is both a hard and soft stool.
